Two Trains
Two trains in different cities head toward each other at different speeds.
Train A, travelling at 70 miles per hour, leaves Gimli heading toward Wawa, 300 miles away.
At the same time, Train B, travelling 80 miles per hour, leaves Wawa heading toward Gimli.
When do the two trains meet?
How far from each city do they meet?
Speed of Train A: 70 mph.
Speed of Train B: 80 mph.
Distance between Wawa and Gimli: 300 miles
The total distance the trains will travel is 300 miles.
Use the distance formula (Distance = rate x time).
Train A moving at 70 mph in t hours will cover 70t miles.
Train B moving at 80 mph in t hours will cover 80t miles.
The two trains will cover the distance in 70t + 80t hours.
Thus 70t + 80t = 300
And 150t = 300
Whence t = 2
Therefore the trains will meet in 2 hours.
2x70=140 miles from Gimli, and 2x80=160 miles from Wawa.
